The family and friends of Dwight D. Boesiger created this scholarship in 2018 in memory of Dwight. Dwight worked over 30 years as a Chemical Engineer with Phillips Petroleum Company primarily in Research and Development. Upon retirement in 1993, Dwight pursued his passion for flying and became a certified flight instructor. Teaching others to fly was one of his biggest thrills, and nothing made him happier than seeing his students become proficient pilots.

Dwight was also a continuous student and delved with glee into researching any project he undertook. He enjoyed tutoring and encouraging students in the pursuit of science and technology.

In memory of Dwight’s penchant for research, and his drive to share knowledge and encourage learning, this award is presented each year to college-bound seniors who are interested in Science, Technology, Engineering, Math (STEM), or Aviation; and who embody the qualities of a natural leader – integrity, community involvement, and a positive attitude.

Award Details:

Up to $2,000 payable as 50 percent per semester for the first year as long as a 3.0 or higher college GPA is maintained. Recipients may be invited to reapply for scholarship dollars for a second year. Students are eligible to receive up to a maximum of $4,000 in scholarship monies payable to the university, college, junior college, trade or vocational following proof of acceptance or enrollment. Students may also receive a $1,000 grant upon earning a Private Pilot’s Certificate, or instrument rating. Additional documentation may be required in order to receive this grant.

Scholarships will be awarded to students intending to pursue a career in STEM or Aviation-related studies. Recipients will be selected based on prescribed criteria, strength of essay, financial need, and strong character as demonstrated through letters of recommendation.

Eligibility Criteria:

• High School or Tri-County Tech student in good standing and qualifying for graduation
• Unless the applicant is a college student invited to re-apply, the applicant must be a resident of one of the following Oklahoma counties: Washington or Osage. Or the following Kansas counties: Montgomery and Chautauqua.
• 3.0 or higher GPA (unweighted for high school applicants)
• Student intends to pursue a degree in STEM or Aviation-related field and/or become a private pilot
• Strong consideration given to students who reflect significant financial need
• Consideration given to students active in extra-curricular activities that focus on mentoring youth

Required Addendums:

• Personal essay of 500 to 1000 words, addressing the topic, “Why I want to pursue a STEM/Aviation-related field of study.”
• Brief, personal biography of 200 to 500 words
• Two letters of recommendation:
  • One letter must be from a faculty member of the applicant’s current school
  • One letter must be from any unrelated community member, teacher, mentor, etc. of the student’s choice
• Copy of submitted FAFSA
• Official high school transcript (or official college transcript, if applicable)
