The United States Bill of Rights is comprised of the first ten amendments to the U.S. Constitution. Among other provisions, the amendments outline specific individual freedoms and rights. Likewise, several national fundraising associations and philanthropic organizations created a set of important tenets that outline specific rights of individuals who support nonprofits. The Donor’s Bill of Rights is a list of ten key principles that the Bartlesville Community Foundation considers paramount in our ongoing effort to help everyone realize their charitable aspirations.
The following is a personalized list of The Donor’s Bill of Rights:
- To be informed of the BCF’s mission and the way we intend to use donated resources, and of our capacity to use donations effectively for their intended purposes.
- To be informed of the identity of those serving on the BCF’s governing board, and to expect the board to exercise prudent judgment in its stewardship responsibilities.
- To have access to the BCF’s most recent financial statements.
- To be assured gifts will be used for the purposes for which they were given.
- To receive appropriate acknowledgement and recognition.
- To be assured that information about a donation is handled with respect and with confidentiality to the extent provided by law.
- To expect that all relationships with individuals representing organizations of interest to the donor will be professional in nature.
- To be informed whether those seeking donations are volunteers, employees of the BCF or hired solicitors. (Note: The BCF does not employ outside individuals to seek donations.)
- To have the opportunity for their names to be deleted from mailing lists that an organization may intend to share. (Note: The BCF does not share such information.)
- To feel free to ask questions when making a donation and to receive prompt, truthful and forthright answers.
