Hughes Family (2011)

The Hughes legacy began in Bartlesville when Arthur and Elsie Hughes were brought to our bustling, young town by Frank Phillips. After running a successful Phillips division in Amarillo, TX the thriving oil company transferred Arthur to Bartlesville and promoted him to assistant sales manager.

Arthur was considered a pioneer in the early oil industry and retired in 1954, having served 16 years as a director and member of the Phillips executive committee. In 1928, Arthur and Elsie purchased the now famous Hughes Ranch southwest of Bartlesville. The Hughes had four children: Sara, Anna Marie, Robert and John.

John Hughes and his wife Lorna were married in 1956 and have been key figures in our community ever since. They moved onto the ranch as newlyweds and their love affair with the land began. Lorna and John have four children and 13 grandchildren. Their firstborn Mary Hughes Hudson is an active part of civic life where she lives in Guthrie, Oklahoma.

Three of the Hughes children, Jane Hughes Kirkpatrick, Robert Hughes, who assists his father in management and operation of Hughes Ranch, and Sally Hughes Trentman have made their home in Bartlesville. The Hughes children and grandchildren continue to carry out John and Lorna’s values of community involvement and generosity.
